Don’t be fooled by their tasty appearance; Gummylamps are a pretty lousy snack. In fact, we don’t recommend eating them at all. The very worst part of it is when you get down to the base because it’s crammed full of crunchy, inedible electronics: super-bright LED bulbs, a USB power jack, a sleep timer, a particularly amusing on-off switch that only works when you squeeze the bear’s tummy, and so on. Not very tasty at all.

What matters is that Gummylamps shine “just right”: bright enough to read a book but soft enough to fall asleep with it on. And they feel just right too: firm and squishy all at once. They’re also portable so you can move them around as needed and they’ll keep on illuminating. And, ironically enough, they’re actually made of non-toxic food-grade plastic. For real. But still don’t eat them.

We all long for the days when (without the benefit of big kid toys like cars) plopping on and throwing around a bean bag chair was as good as it got. As adults it may be hard to justify having a foam-filled blue blob in your living room, but the new line of cute bean bag chairs from Woouf in witty shapes like giant cameras and hamburgers will satisfy nostalgia without alienating your “downtown” friends.

New York’s top graphic artists to designing tattoos for our kids?
That’s the idea behind Tattly, an online shop selling “designy” temporary tattoos. We love You’re Late by Julia Rothman, Tattone by Josh Smith, and Scribble by James Victore. In fact, they are so cool, we don’t even think we are going to share them with our kids.

Baby GO! (toddler) Free
Fabulous because it reinforces the letters along with the child’s keystrokes, and the girl’s voice is adorable to boot.

Pocket Pond and Cake Doodle (baby to adult/kindergarten) Free/$0.99
This realistic, serene koi pond lets you swish the water and make the fish change direction with a satisfying sound. Hours of zen. Got a little Cake Boss on your hands? With Cake Doodle, they can tip and shake the iPad to add ingredients, then mix, bake, ice, decorate and “eat” their cake creations.

Pocketphonics (pre-schooler) $1.99
I love this app because it helps children recognize letters and their sounds through repetition. It also tweaks their fine motor skills by having them trace letters. It involves three of their senses and thus reinforces learning. Just keep the volume down low because the mechanical voice makes you crazy.

A lot of moms I know rave about Total Baby. It keeps track of everything baby related (feeds, poops, naps, doctor appointments) so you can keep your head above water when you’re too exhausted to remember your name.
